Why Fantasy?
So why a fantasy story?
I've always been a huge fan of fantasy, even at a young age I was reading about knights and loved the descriptions of medieval England. I was also a huge fan of dinosaurs, which was a natural leap to mythical dragons.
As I got older I would marvel at epic fantasy books, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and their TV or film counterparts. Rich engaging worlds which were a visual feast for my imagination.
I wanted a piece of the action, I've always enjoyed writing but never completed a full piece of work. One evening I just started writing about a boy, living in a fantasy world with dragons. This developed and grew to become the completed manuscript I have today.
I'm now 20,000 words into the sequel and hope to continue with the series. One day, if I'm very lucky, I must just find an agent and a publisher :)

Dragon Sword
Brian receives a special sword from a stranger. A blade with ornate dragon design on the hilt. This sword is not a normal weapon, forged centuries ago using old magic, the blade itself is designed to respect dragons and their riders.
The weapon cannot be used against a dragon, their riders treated them as equals and wanted a blade that could be used to defend them both together and respect their relationship with their mounts.
The days of old magic have passed, along with the dragons, many of these weapons still remain in the world, but most are hidden away. Brian's gift of such a weapon could prove to be a huge help, and also burden in his quest.

Brian's Sketch
Not mentioned in the book, but Brian later keeps a journal of his exploits, including some sketches he's made using ink quill and parchment.
Attached is one such sketch he made of the dark dragon.

Dragon Riders
As Red explains to Brian, there used to be dragon riders who had a close partnership with their steeds. Dragon and man were in a closely bound alliance which was beneficial to both parties, however this soured with the advance of man's technology.
In time the dragons were betrayed and forced into exile. Those who opposed the change fought back and a huge bloody war resulted. Dragon riders remained true to their oath of allegiance, but their methods died along with the dragons.
It has always been written that dragons were the powerful enemy, the scourge of mankind. But it appears they have been wronged, and it was instead man's thirst for power and knowledge that muddied the water. Brian finds himself struggling to believe this information at first, but soon learns that dragons are not all bad. Well, some of them. But the same can easily be said of mankind.
