Another sketch book drawing from Brian. This time his friend - Red.

Brian's Sketch

Not mentioned in the book, but Brian later keeps a journal of his exploits, including some sketches he's made using ink quill and parchment.

Dragon Riders

As Red explains to Brian, there used to be dragon riders who had a close partnership with their steeds. Dragon and man were in a closely bound alliance which was beneficial to both parties, however this soured with the advance of man's technology.

In time the dragons were betrayed and forced into exile. Those who opposed the change fought back and a huge bloody war resulted. Dragon riders remained true to their oath of allegiance, but their methods died along with the dragons.

It has always been written that dragons were the powerful enemy, the scourge of mankind. But it appears they have been wronged, and it was instead man's thirst for power and knowledge that muddied the water. Brian finds himself struggling to believe this information at first, but soon learns that dragons are not all bad. Well, some of them. But the same can easily be said of mankind.

Dark Dragon

The dark dragon is a bit of an enigma. Damaged after the wars of man and angry for being forced to live in isolation. Dragons are proud and intelligent creatures, but they can also be very vicious and powerful. The dark dragon is bitter, and this bitterness has twisted it into a confused and violent creature.

The dark dragon wants dragons to be welcomed back into society, to be made public once again. After meeting Vincent this opportunity is provided. If the dark dragon agrees to perform some tasks for Vincent which will help him become the next king, then Vincent will in turn create a new law that announces that dragons still exist, and should be welcomed back by mankind.

The dark dragon can be volatile, and doesn't trust Vincent, but the feeling is mutual. No good can come from a partnership of twisted minds.

Red knows the dark dragon and has previously attempted to communicate, however this ended in a messy and aggressive interaction which left both no option but to keep out of each others way in the future.

But with Brian working with Red to hunt the dark dragon down, a reunion appears unavoidable.

Red - A Dragon

"Now he could see, that as well as the orange glowing eyes, this dragon wore a scaled skin of deep red. A plume of horns crested its brow and the back of the head, they looked impressively sharp."

Red is a dragon, a particularly large, red and orange eyed beast adorned with horns and a full set of sharp teeth. He can breath fire, he can fly and he's very well spoken.

Red, named by Brian due to his colour, lives isolated in the mountains. Living out eternity alone and away from populated areas Red just wants to be left alone and doesn't want to cause any trouble. But, there is something he needs, and as it happens it ties in with Brian's own mission. Brian seeks a dragon, but which one he does not know.

Red happens to know for a fact that he is one of two remaining dragons left in the kingdom, and he will help Brian locate the one he seeks. The aptly named dark dragon. A beast covered in jet black scales with a demeanor to match.

Red does not reveal why he is so willing to help, but he does do a great deal towards educating Brian with the history of dragon and man and their past alliances. Slowly forging their own alliance and friendship Brian and Red head out to find the dark dragon.

Vincent - The villain

What can I say about Vincent? He's evil, selfish and just plain nasty. He lives to gain and only looks out for himself. Seeking as much power as he can he devices a scheme to overthrow the throne, for he is, in fact, the King's brother.

The Princess, Trula, is next in line for the throne as the King's only child. However, Vincent has other plans. He is constantly looking for ways to remove Trula from the picture and leave the throne open for himself to take. However he has a problem. He just can't find the perfect scheme that will work. He toils day and night trying to come up with a foolproof plan that will not put him in the firing line as a suspect.

Vincent is already despised by those around him due to his attitude and his lack in personal hygiene. As the brother of the King you would imagine he was happy with his position, but his mind is fixated on achieving more. Luckily for Trula, Vincent is a coward. Time and time again he comes up with some elaborate way of killing, or kidnapping the Princess, only to cancel his plans due to the fear of being caught.

One of his favourite places to think is a lonely cottage out in the woods which grow on the border of the Central City realm. He likes to walk in the woods, knowing that no one can disturb his train of thought. But a chance encounter in the woods with something completely unexpected changes everything.

Welcome to the Blog for The Tooth

The Tooth is a young adult fantasy novel which I've written and hope to publish. I'm currently submitting to agencies and publishers and keep a nice collection of rejection letters to remind me to keep on trying!

I hope to post information on the characters, the story and receive comments and inspiration from anyone and everyone who's interested in this particular tale.

I've recently started on the sequel, The Scale, and already have some neat ideas as to where to take this particular story line.

So, welcome. Have fun!
